Virtues in Salah

Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45)

When this surah was revealed the companions were being tortured and oppressed, so what did they need to do? They have to follow what is conveyed in the Qur’an. Must read and understand, then practice. And then have to convey to others. So the Prophet Muhammad and his companions had to convey the teachings of the Qur’an to mankind.

This is the command of amar ibqa’ie (continue to do the things that have been and are being done) - that is, not just told the Prophet Muhammad to recite the Qur’an to them because he had recited it to his companions before. And this ‘reading’ means always and always recite the verses of the Qur’an to them. That way humans can understand. Because human beings need to be reminded of this Qur’an.

So, although this verse seems to be literally directed to the Prophet Muhammad, but it is also an instruction for us as well. Because we must also continue the work of the Prophet to convey the teachings of the Qur’an to mankind.

The meaning of 'read' is not to read yourself but to 'read' to others. Because when we recite it to others, then the demands of the revelation will permeate even more into the hearts of those who read the Qur’an to others. Da'wah actually increases our faith.

To those who hear it, they may accept it or not. But those who read the Qur'an must have accepted the Qur'an before that. This means that the Qur’an must be read, understood and accepted first before we convey it to others. So of course before we convey to others, we have a solid understanding of the Qur’an, right? Wouldn't you like to convey something that we ourselves do not necessarily accept or not?

One more thing we need to remember, ‘reading’ is not just ‘spelling’ and mentioning the verses in the Qur’an. But more important is the understanding of those verses. Misunderstandings on this matter cause our society to only focus on learning to read and learn tajwid only. Many do not care directly about the understanding of the Qur’an.

They teach their children to read the Qur’an and they send their children to tahfiz schools, but they do not care about understanding the Qur’an. What good is a web site if it simply "blends in" with everything else out there? This is very dangerous because many people read, but at the same time, they violate the instructions in the Qur’an itself.

Therefore, we are very important in this lesson on the interpretation of the Qur’an. Let them not even know how to read, let them not be good at tajwid, read and crawl, but learn what Allah wants to convey to us. At the same time, learn to read a little. That could come later.

And they should establish prayer. So the 'establishment of prayer' is to convey revelation to human beings because prayer can give strength. In our delivery of revelation to human beings, we need that strength and that strength can be obtained through prayer.

This is a personal practice or done by yourself and it will be perfect when we have recited the Qur’an to others.

And just as reading the Qur’an is not just reading, but must be fully understood, so it is with prayer. Do not make a movement and say only what needs to be said, but need to appreciate what is being said. Then it affects us.

That prayer can prevent people from doing embarrassing and bad things. Because prayer has a spirit that can prevent people who do it from committing sins.

So if we are praying but still doing embarrassing things such as looking at obscene things, committing adultery, looking at women with lust, then maybe the prayers we do are not done properly and do not mean anything to us. That is the kind of prayer that has no spirit in it.

So we have to understand what we say in the prayer, what we do in the prayer, the importance of prayer, the philosophy of prayer and so on. It is high quality prayer that can prevent people from committing vices and sins.

In a hadith through the narration of Imran and Ibn Abbas in marfu 'has been mentioned:

Whoever prays still can not prevent himself from committing heinous and evil deeds, then no one else he is further away from God.
That is why Allah does not say ‘make prayers’ but ‘establish prayers’. It is like a building that if we imagine a strong building with a strong foundation, then it will be an important thing that can protect us from external elements.

So if we are still praying but still doing evil things, then it is because our prayers are not established properly. So we have to learn the right way to pray and we have to improve the quality of our prayers. This requires continuous learning. Do not pray in the old notch only.

We are afraid we belong to the group mentioned in this hadith:

Rasulullah s.a.w. asserted, "Later will appear among my people, a people (groups) who read the Qur'an. Your readings are not considered by them and your prayers are not recognized by them. Your fasting has no meaning in their eyes. They feel most entitled to read the Qur'an so that you will think that the Qur'an belongs only (revealed to) them. In fact, in the hereafter in the hereafter the Qur’an will curse them. They look diligent in praying but what they read when the prayer only reaches their throats (does not touch the heart and establish their practices) and they will leave Islam as the arrow comes out of its bow. " (Sahih Bukhari (6933))

Remember Allah outside of prayer is greater than anything else. Allah mentions remembering Him after mentioning about prayer because Allah wants to tell the advantages of Prayer where it not only protects us from evil deeds but it gives us the advantage to remember Allah.

Or, it means to tell that our memory of God is something very big. It is larger than the world and all its contents. It prevents human beings from doing evil on this earth and it will make it easy for human beings to do good. People who are willing to commit such immorality are because they do not remember God.

Or it means, remembering Allah through this prayer is greater than remembrance in other ways. Many of our people like to recite dhikr in various ways, including heretical ways. They forget that the most important way to remember Allah is through prayer. So do a lot of circumcision prayers. That is better than the remembrance of thousands.

Ibn Abbas says that the meaning of this verse contains two takwil, namely:

remember God in the face of anything He forbids.
God's memory of you is far greater than your memory of Him. When we remember God, then God remembers us more. This is further strengthened by the verse Baqarah: 152

فَاذكُروني أَذكُركُم

Therefore, remember Me, I will remember (you),

And God knows what we do every day and every time. So let us be vigilant with what we do. Make sure what we do is good practice. We must guard ourselves from doing bad things and vices. This requires self-strength and faith strength.

And as mentioned earlier, it can be achieved by performing prayers well. Because fervent prayer educates us to realize that Allah is watching over us. And then bring that feeling out of prayer. If all the time we realize God is watching over us, then we will be afraid to sin.
